(Luke) 11:8-13
8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. \
11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; \
12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? \
13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. \ 한 사람이 두 주인을 섬기지 못할 것이니 혹 이를 미워하며 저를 사랑하거나 혹 이를 중히 여기며 저를 경히 여김이라 너희가 하나님과 재물을 겸하여 섬기지 못하느니라
Luke 11:6–13
Title: A Wonderful Life That Asks for the Holy Spirit
Last time, we studied Luke 11:1–4, the Lord’s Prayer.
Jesus taught us how to pray, and this also means there are ways we should not pray. He gave the example of the Pharisee and the tax collector. A prayer that comes from pride is a wrong prayer.
A prayer that tries to impress people will look for public places. But a real prayer—one that stands before God—can be done in a small, quiet room.
If the Lord’s Prayer is the prayer taught by the One who knows God best, then it is good to follow. We can trust that God listens to this kind of prayer.
1 John 5:14
“If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
Right after teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus talks about the attitude, heart, and faith of a person who prays.
In Luke, Jesus gives the story of a man who keeps knocking at his friend’s door at midnight. Sometimes we give up too quickly in prayer. We think, “God won’t answer this,” so we do not even try. But Jesus tells us to ask boldly, to not give up.
Jesus tells us that God is:
- Someone who gives good things,
- Someone who wants to give good things,
- And Someone who is able to give good things.
To believe in God is to trust that He is a Father who wants to give good gifts to His children. He will not give what is harmful.
In the story, the friend gives bread not because he is a good friend, but because of the man’s bold asking. Jesus says, “How much more will God give to His children when they ask!”
So Jesus tells us:
“Ask, and it will be given to you.
Seek, and you will find.
Knock, and it will be opened to you.”
At the end of the story, Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit.
We learn that:
- The Holy Spirit is good.
- The Holy Spirit is a gift.
- The Holy Spirit is given by God Himself.
God the Father gave His Son to us.
God the Son told His disciples to “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
If the Holy Spirit is a gift, we should ask, “Why is this gift good?”
The Holy Spirit helps us live as true human beings.
He knows us better than we know ourselves.
Jesus knows God perfectly.
But who knows you best?
We think we know ourselves, but often we do not.
For example, a doctor knows what is good for a patient better than the patient does. A diabetic person may not know what they should or should not eat. The doctor has to explain it.
In the same way, who knows our spiritual needs best?
We know some things, but many times we do not.
When we are spiritually immature, we do not know what we truly need. So doing whatever we “feel like” can be dangerous.
Luke shows that Jesus talked about the Holy Spirit because:
The Holy Spirit knows what is truly good for us.
And Jesus tells us not to be afraid to ask for the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:26
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with wordless groans.”
A humble person understands their weaknesses and asks God for help.
Trying with your own strength is good, but trusting only your strength is pride. This is especially true in matters of the soul.
Sometimes we do not know what the real problem is.
We do not try to fix it.
We do not pray.
We do not even notice our spiritual pain.
But some people still say, “I only trust myself.” That kind of person cannot be helped.
And no matter how smart artificial intelligence becomes, it can never heal the human soul.
1 Corinthians 2:14
“Spiritual things can only be understood through the Spirit.”
This is true in our relationships as well.
If we cannot understand something, we cannot accept it.
There are four areas of understanding in relationships:
- Things I know and others also know
- Things I know but others do not know
- Things others know but I do not know
- Things neither I nor others know
The fourth area is the most difficult.
But in that hidden area, God knows, and God can guide us.
This is why we need Him.
James 4:4
“Friendship with the world is hatred toward God.”
To be a “friend of the world” means to love what the world loves.
Even believers can love the world more than God.
The Bible calls this spiritual adultery—loving something else instead of the One we are supposed to love.
Jesus also speaks clearly about this:
Matthew 6:24
“You cannot serve both God and money.”
Money was made by people to help people.
But some people love money so much that they stop living like humans and follow it like animals.
None of us are free from these temptations.
We make mistakes.
We sin without noticing.
We love the wrong things.
That is why we must depend on God—
why we must depend on the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:27
“The Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God’s will.”
If you do not know what to pray for,
ask God for the Holy Spirit.
Without the Holy Spirit, we will only live a physical life, an empty life without a soul.
I realized that I myself lived like this—
not living like a true person, almost like an animal—
and I did not even know it.
A person must be born again by the Holy Spirit.
Only then do we see who we really are.
But at the same time, we see how much God loves us.
Then we begin to see the way to live as a true human being.
We begin to have dreams and vision again.
Amen.
Therefore, let us ask God for the Holy Spirit.
God will give Him.
God wants to give Him.
May we receive the Holy Spirit as God’s gift,
and live every moment with His help,
following God’s will.
Amen.
